How Does Something So Small Create Such Big Feelings?
In the past, I’ve written about how wonderful it has been to watch the story and characters I created come to life. I’ve loved seeing the reactions from children, as well as adults, after they meet Little Seed, Rooty, Sparkle, Digger, and Weaver.
I have no doubt that many authors understand this feeling. You put your heart and soul into a book, then watch as readers form their own connections with the story. That was something I hoped for and, to some extent, expected. What was unexpected was a passionate wave of emotion that I felt to my core.
After publishing The Little Seed’s Long Wait, the story continued to grow beyond the pages. One way the story evolved was by bringing Little Seed to life in the form of a plush companion.
And was he ever the cutest!
Children and adults have fallen in love with him and welcomed him into their homes and lives. He’s been traveling to new places for a few months now, and I love these adventures for him. I really do!
So why, on one particular day, as I dropped off another package that was most likely headed to a loving home, did I well up with so much emotion? It was as if I was sending away my own child.
“No. This is crazy. This is ridiculous,” I said to myself after sending the package on its way.
But I couldn’t stop the emotions.
I sat with those feelings for a long while. And then, there it was. The reason behind the emotion. It wasn’t about letting go of another plush. It was the tendrils of happiness as I realized Little Seed was about to belong to a child. I didn’t know that for certain, but I had a feeling that was where he was going.
I visualized a child hugging Little Seed.
Playing with him.
Reading with him.
Sleeping with him.
And I was overwhelmed.
I didn’t expect to feel this way. But I did.
